Article #1: God, Country and the USV

Everybody has their biases in life, I am no exception. My bias towards the circumstances of our lives and the things that happen in life is that there are no accidents, there is no such thing as fate and coincidence is God’s way of staying anonymous. Since I do not understand the mind of God I cannot tell you why you and I were fortunate to live in this country, I am just grateful for it.

All of us have chosen to serve our country, (and for some of us God and country), by serving in the USV. As I said earlier, I do not believe there are accidents and coincidences, so I believe we are serving because God gave us the heart and opportunity to do so. Though I certainly will not ascribe the term religious to the USV, I do feel as though there is a spiritual quality to the service we perform. How many times have any one of us looked into the grieving eyes of a widow, or family member, as they look for comfort in this terribly difficult time of saying goodbye, and with our smile comforted them? I, personally, cannot count the number times that one or more family members have come to me after the service with appreciation, and then had them ask me for prayer for themselves, or another loved one.

It is also my experience that when we serve we are showing the face of God to those we serve. We already understand the solemn and special responsibility we have in being part of the ceremony. Giving honors to those who have served so we can live in a free country is no small task, and it is a privilege to play any part in the recognition of their service. All of this is simply to say “well done”. So often I have witnessed the care, concern and respect you show the loved ones of those we honor, and over and over again I am honored to be in your company and serve the grieving along side you.

I want to assure you that in your service to God, Country and the USV you touch hurting people with a healing heart. I am sure that in your doing so you are honoring God, the country and the USV with a selflessness that is an impressive example to all who witness it.

Romans 12:11 - 13
11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Your Fellow Servant,

Chaplain Dan (Helix)
